FAQ
Will it cause any damage?
Modern leak detection aims to find issues with as little disruption as possible. In some cases, limited access may be needed—usually just removing a bath panel. Occasionally, a small hole (about pencil-sized) might be made, typically beneath shower trays, to insert a camera into hidden spaces. Keeping damage minimal is important for insurance purposes, as speculative damage is often not covered.
How long will it take?
We always ask for full-day access. Heating issues typically take the longest—usually at least half a day, though sometimes they're resolved much quicker. Hot or cold water leaks usually take around half a day to locate and report on. That said, some leaks we expect to be simple turn out tricky, and the tricky ones sometimes end up being straightforward!
Do I need to turn the water off?
For heating leaks, we usually don’t need to turn off the water. But for most other leak detection work, our engineer will likely need to shut off the water for a short time. During pressure tests, it’s essential that no water is used—this includes toilets and appliances. The same goes for trace gas testing, where any water use or an open stopcock can throw off the results. That’s why it’s so important we can locate and access all stopcocks—both inside and out on the street, if needed. This applies to all types of inspections—homes, businesses, even large buildings like schools—especially when a leak could affect multiple areas.
